Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna is deepening his engagement with opposition heavyweights as jostling ahead of the 2027 General Election picks up pace.
On Thursday, the Linda Mwananchi leader held back-to-back meetings with Wiper’s Kalonzo Musyoka and Jubilee presidential candidate Fred Matiang’i—a move widely read as a deliberate push to shore up ties across the opposition divide.
Sifuna met Kalonzo at the Wiper leader’s Nairobi residence for what he described as a morning catch-up over tea, later sharing details of the meeting on social media.
He said the two agreed that Kenyans who “mean well” must work together to steer the country in a new direction, adding they were committed to rescuing the country from the current administration and restoring constitutional democracy, “whatever it takes.”
Sifuna went on to hold talks with other key opposition figures, among them Embakasi East MP Babu Owino and Siaya Governor James Orengo, underlining the scale of the consultations now underway.
The flurry of meetings comes against the backdrop of an already crowded opposition negotiation table. Earlier consultations on September 1 brought together Kalonzo, PLP leader Martha Karua, Matiang’i, and DAP-K’s Eugene Wamalwa as the coalition wrestles with how to settle on a single candidate to challenge President Ruto.
Kalonzo has favored a boardroom negotiation approach, while a camp aligned with Rigathi Gachagua and Matiang’i has pushed for scientific polling to determine who carries the strongest support.
Sifuna’s Linda Mwananchi movement has also been eyeing a formal tie-up with this broader coalition, though he has so far stayed deliberately non-committal on whether the movement will field its own candidate, produce a running mate, or fold into the wider opposition front.
