Nairobi is set for a major political mobilization on Sunday as Senator Edwin Sifuna leads the Linda Mwananchi movement back to the capital for a rally expected to test the outfit’s growing grassroots influence ahead of the 2027 general election.
The rally, scheduled for September 13 at Jacaranda Grounds in Embakasi East, will mark Linda Mwananchi’s return to Nairobi after months of taking its political message across the country.
Sifuna announced the Nairobi event earlier this month, sharing a poster on X accompanied by the message, “Back to base.” The movement has since intensified preparations for what its leaders have described as a major political gathering.
Embakasi East MP Babu Owino has been at the forefront of mobilization, urging Nairobi residents to turn out for the rally. He said the event will be the culmination of several stops across the county, with activities expected to begin early in the morning.
The Nairobi gathering comes after Linda Mwananchi conducted a nationwide mobilization campaign that has taken its leaders to numerous counties, including Kakamega, Busia, Kisumu, Mombasa, Nakuru, Vihiga, Bungoma, Trans Nzoia, Homa Bay, and Meru.
The movement has used the tours to push its political message while building a grassroots network ahead of the 2027 elections.
Sifuna has also stepped up preparations in Nairobi, meeting politicians associated with Bunge la Mwananchi ahead of the rally. The group has pledged to support the event, although concerns have been raised over alleged plans to disrupt the gathering.
Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka has also raised concerns over the reported threats, while organizers have maintained that the rally will proceed.
The Orange Democratic Movement, meanwhile, has sought to distance itself from the confrontation narrative. ODM Nairobi chairman George Aladwa said the party had no intention of disrupting the rally, arguing that Linda Mwananchi has a right to seek support from Nairobi residents.
