A 70-year-old farmer from Malava, Kakamega County, has declared his intention to contest for the presidency in the 2027 general election.
Simon Musungu Liru, a resident of Shiamoni village in Kabras South, said he wants to offer Kenyans an alternative form of leadership focused on greater citizen participation and the interests of ordinary people.
Musungu, who has spent years farming sugarcane, said his decision to enter the presidential race was influenced by what he considers shortcomings in the current administration.
He criticized President William Ruto’s government, saying it had failed to meet the expectations of many Kenyans.
“I want a leadership that involves citizens in decisions that affect them,” Musungu said.
He said his administration would seek to give citizens a bigger role in national decision-making while ensuring that government resources benefit Kenyans more broadly. Musungu also criticized some opposition leaders, questioning their records in previous administrations and accusing some of pursuing personal interests.
The aspiring presidential candidate has not yet named a running mate, saying that decision would be made as his political plans take shape.
