Kakamega Governor Fernandes Barasa has dismissed a viral video purportedly depicting him in a witchcraft ritual, describing it as manipulated and AI-generated content intended to damage his reputation.
In a statement released on September 29, 2026, the Governor’s Press Unit said the video was being circulated on social media by former Kakamega Senator Cleophas Malala and his alleged surrogates.
According to the county government, an official photograph of Barasa had been deliberately attached to a manipulated video depicting him in what appeared to be an objectionable setting involving an individual alleged to be a witch doctor.
The county government said the material was part of an attempt to create what it termed a false narrative about Barasa’s character, beliefs, and conduct.
“The use of digitally manipulated or AI-generated material to create a false impression about a public officer is not legitimate political discourse,” the statement said.
The governor’s office further said legal action had been initiated against Malala and other individuals involved in the publication and dissemination of the material.
The matter was reported at Kakamega Central Police Station on September 29 and referred to the relevant authorities, according to the statement.
The county government also cited the Constitution, arguing that freedom of expression must be exercised while respecting the rights, dignity, and reputation of others.
It urged residents and members of the public to ignore and refrain from further circulating the video.
The statement described Barasa as a committed member of the Roman Catholic Church and said his public service was anchored on faith, integrity, and the welfare of Kakamega residents.
The county government said the governor would remain focused on implementing his administration’s six-point development agenda, covering health, water and sanitation, wealth creation and infrastructure, food security, quality education, social development, and good governance.
Malala had previously been involved in political disputes with Barasa, including allegations surrounding the governor’s 2022 election. The latest statement, however, specifically disputes the authenticity of the viral video and characterises it as fabricated digital content.
