A search for her husband after he failed to return home overnight turned into a horrifying discovery for a woman in Vilaha Village, Mbagara Sub-Location, Mautuma Ward, when she stumbled upon his lifeless body lying on the ground along the road.
The incident left Nancy Anekha with unanswered questions over what happened to her husband, 40-year-old Nyayo Zacharia Lumunyasi, whose body was found with visible injuries on the face.
According to Nancy, Lumunyasi had been in good health on Friday morning and showed no signs of distress. He spent part of the morning helping a neighbour transport manure before returning home to collect more using his animal cart.
Later, he found Nancy drying maize before she left for choir practice at Majengo. When she returned home at around 5 p.m., she found that her husband had helped spread out the maize, taken a bath and was sitting outside with a neighbour.
“I collected the maize and went to the posho mill. When I returned, I found that he had left. As was his usual routine after completing his daily activities, he would sometimes go out for a while to relax,” Nancy told WKT.
She prepared dinner that evening and expected her husband to return, but the hours passed without him coming home.
At around 8 p.m., their dogs began barking, prompting Nancy to step outside to check what was happening. However, she did not see anything unusual and eventually went to sleep at around midnight.
Nancy said the dogs often barked whenever Lumunyasi was approaching home, making their behaviour that evening particularly concerning in hindsight.
She woke up at around 6 a.m. on Saturday and decided to look for her husband at a neighbour’s home. It was during the search that she came across the grim scene—Lumunyasi’s body lying on the ground with his head facing downwards.
She said the family had no idea what had happened to him during the night and could not explain the injuries visible on his face.
His body was collected by officers from the Lumakanda Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) and taken to Village of Hope Mortuary, where it is being preserved pending further investigations.
The circumstances surrounding Lumunyasi’s death remain unclear, with his family and members of the community calling on authorities to conduct thorough investigations and establish how and when he died.
