Residents of Matunda in Likuyani Sub-County, Kakamega County, disrupted transport along the Eldoret-Kitale Highway on Monday after removing railway tracks in protest over a spate of killings, including the murder of a man at a railway crossing.
The protest was led by Nzoia Ward MCA Collins Sifuna Chapurukha, who said residents had endured insecurity for too long. According to residents, at least six murder cases have been reported in the area in recent days. Chapurukha was later arrested by officers from Matunda Police Station following the incident.
Chapurukha said he was alerted to the latest attack at around 1 a.m., when a resident was seriously cut with a machete.
“We rushed him to Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital (MTRH), but unfortunately, he passed away,” he said.
The victim’s body is being preserved at the MTRH mortuary in Eldoret as investigations continue.
Residents accused police of failing to protect them despite a visible security presence in the area and alleged that officers respond swiftly to cases involving illicit alcohol but are slow to act on insecurity.
They are now calling on police to urgently intervene and restore security in the area.
