Bungoma National Polytechnic Principal Godfrey Murunga has responded to allegations by Bungoma gubernatorial aspirant Zachariah Barasa over the management of the institution’s assets, denying claims that politicians have received benefits from the school.
Murunga also explained the polytechnic’s sugarcane farming project, its livestock enterprise, and the construction of its main gate.
Barasa had questioned how much the institution earns from 90 acres leased for sugarcane growing and who receives the proceeds. He also asked who is “holding brief” for Busia Sugar, arguing the Sugar Act does not allow the firm to source cane from Bungoma, since the polytechnic falls in a different zone.
He further alleged that millions of shillings pumped into the project have not been paid back to the institution.
The aspirant additionally accused the principal of destroying 30 acres of riparian land by cutting down indigenous trees and questioned a Sh6 million cash payment received in Webuye.
He also claimed a student was assaulted by the principal and teachers after making a speech and called for those responsible to face the law.
