Traders at Chimoi Market in Lugari Constituency, Kakamega County, have threatened to stage demonstrations over deteriorating conditions and what they term as neglect by the Kakamega County Government.
Established in 1971 and situated along the busy Eldoret–Webuye Highway, the market is among the oldest trading centres in the region. However, it is currently grappling with serious challenges, including poor sanitation, inadequate lighting, and the lack of a designated dumping site.
The market, which hosts about 247 business men and women, continues to operate under difficult conditions despite traders consistently paying taxes to the county government.

According to market chairman John Nyongesa Khwatenge, a formal proposal highlighting the concerns was submitted in February last year, but no action has been taken to date.
He said this is despite assurances from Kakamega Governor Fernandes Barasa that the issues would be addressed.
“I am planning to organize demonstrations at Chimoi Market due to delays in the installation of high-mast floodlights and street lights. The market is in a poor state, with blocked sewage lines and no dustbins,” Khwatenge said.
Traders now warn that unless urgent intervention is undertaken by the county government, they will take to the streets to demand improved working conditions.
