The Football Kenya Federation (FKF) General Assembly has voted 65โ1 to expel Vice-President McDonald Mariga and six other National Executive Committee (NEC) members following a Special General Meeting held in Meru on Saturday, November 7.
The decision marks a major escalation in the leadership wrangles within the federation, which have seen Mariga and his allies clash with FKF President Hussein Mohammed over the management of Kenyan football.
Besides Mariga, those expelled are Robert Kenneth Macharia (Central), Bernard Korir Lagat (Upper Rift Valley), Violet Kerubo Momanyi (Women Representative), Collins Opiyo Kalee (Nyanza), Gabriel Mghendi (Coast), and Daniel Akala Shikanda (Nairobi).
The General Assembly invoked provisions of the FKF Constitution to remove the officials, citing alleged violations including a purported NEC resolution seeking the removal of President Hussein Mohammed, repeated failure to attend NEC meetings, and unauthorized communication on behalf of the federation.
Under Article 41(5) of the FKF Constitution, the dismissal of an NEC member requires a two-thirds majority of valid votes cast through a secret ballot. Ahead of the meeting, reports indicated that at least 61 votes would be needed if all 91 expected delegates participated.
Although the General Assembly approved the expulsions, the precise voting tally, including the number of votes for and against the motion, had not been disclosed in the reports available by the time of publication.
The meeting was also marked by chaotic scenes as police officers intervened to restore order, with teargas reportedly deployed amid confrontations involving groups of youths and delegates over access to the venue.
Mariga arrived under heavy police escort amid claims that some delegates allied to him had been attacked and prevented from accessing the meeting.
The expulsions open a new chapter in FKF’s leadership crisis, raising questions about the federation’s stability as Kenya prepares to co-host the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations alongside Uganda and Tanzania.
