Sifuna storms Kitale after Ruto’s exit in daring show of political might

Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna made a bold statement in Kitale on Friday, leading the Linda Mwananchi brigade into the town shortly after President William Ruto had departed, in a dramatic display of political defiance.

Sifuna’s appearance turned Kitale into a stage for a high-stakes political contest, with the vocal senator and his allies seeking to demonstrate that the president’s presence in the region would not silence their political mobilization.

The rally followed Ruto’s visit to Trans Nzoia, setting up a politically charged showdown as rival camps sought to assert their influence in the town.

Trans Nzoia Governor George Natembeya had earlier signaled the planned mobilization, promising a gathering of residents marked by music and dance after the president’s departure.

Sifuna and his allies subsequently took their message to supporters, reinforcing the Linda Mwananchi faction’s determination to challenge the government and rally Kenyans around its political agenda ahead of the 2027 General Election.

A daring challenge to Ruto’s influence

The events in Kitale underscored Sifuna’s increasingly prominent role in the opposition’s mobilization efforts. By appearing in the town after Ruto’s visit in his week-long tour of the North Rift, the senator projected an image of a politician willing to take the contest directly into territory where the president had just been campaigning.

But the political spectacle was accompanied by tension. Linda Mwananchi leaders were teargassed shortly after addressing supporters. Two police officers were injured and two government vehicles damaged during clashes involving rival political supporters.
