Family demands answers as Chesamisi Boys student dies while being rushed to hospital

Tension has gripped Chesamisi Boys High School following the sudden death of a 17-year-old Form Four student, Eugene Wekesa, with his family now demanding answers over the circumstances surrounding his passing.

According to reports, Eugene fell ill at around 1 a.m. on Monday while at school. However, his parents claim they were informed several hours later, raising concerns about a possible delay in communication.

Efforts were made to rush him to hospital, but he was reportedly found unresponsive in the school van before being pronounced dead on arrival at Lugulu Mission Hospital.

The grieving family has questioned the sequence of events leading to his death, citing alleged delays in response and possible negligence. They have also raised claims that the student may have collapsed after receiving an injection at the school, an allegation that has intensified calls for clarity.

On Tuesday, tensions escalated as family members stormed the school compound seeking explanations from the administration, calling for full transparency and a thorough investigation into the incident.

Eugene’s body is currently preserved at Lugulu Mortuary, with burial arrangements scheduled for Friday as family, friends, and the school community come to terms with the loss.

School statement

In an official statement, the school confirmed that the student fell ill shortly after midnight, prompting immediate intervention from the institution’s medical personnel. The school nurse administered first aid and alerted the student’s parents as his condition worsened.

According to the statement, the school arranged for immediate transport to Kimilili Hospital, located approximately five minutes away. The school van, carrying the nurse and the ailing student, was en route when the student’s uncle intercepted them and requested to transfer him to his private vehicle for transport to Lugulu Hospital instead.

Tragically, Eugine was pronounced dead on arrival at Lugulu Hospital, the statement said.
