The community of Lugari Station in Lugari Constituency is mourning the loss of Samuel Murungu Gichia, fondly known as Kamau, a medic who succumbed to cancer after a prolonged illness.
His father, Pastor James Gichia of Moi’s Bridge, told WKT that his 36-year-old son passed away on Thursday evening at Living Room Hospital in Kaptagat, Uasin Gishu County, where he had been undergoing treatment.
The grieving father accused a senior doctor who runs a private facility of initially misdiagnosing his son’s condition as Stage One cancer, only for it to later emerge that the disease had progressed beyond Stage Three, making it significantly harder to manage.
“The doctor, I will not mention him, swindled us of our hard-earned money—up to 100,000 shillings per session—only for it to later become clear that the treatment was misleading and even harmful,” he said, expressing deep frustration and accusing some medics of prioritizing profit over patient care.
Despite the loss, Pastor Gichia said the family has been comforted by an outpouring of support from the Lugari community, who have sent messages of condolence and stood in solidarity with them.
“The Luhya community stood with my son throughout his career and is now standing with me in this painful moment. I am deeply grateful,” he said.
