Arsenal’s dream of winning a first UEFA Champions League title ended in heartbreak after they lost to Paris Saint-Germain in a dramatic penalty shootout following a 1-1 draw in the final played in Budapest on Saturday night.
The English side made a bright start and took the lead in the opening half through Kai Havertz, who punished a defensive mistake to give Mikel Arteta’s men an early advantage. Arsenal, playing defensive discipline throughout the game, looked on course to secure a historic European triumph.
However, PSG responded strongly after the break and equalised through Ousmane Dembélé from the penalty spot after the referee awarded a controversial foul inside the box. The decision sparked protests from Arsenal players and fans, with tensions rising as the match headed into extra time.
Both teams created chances during the additional period, but neither could find a winning goal. Arsenal goalkeeper David Raya produced key saves to keep his side in the contest, while PSG also remained solid at the back.
The match was eventually decided by penalties, where PSG held their nerve to win 4-3. Arsenal suffered costly misses during the shootout, with both Eze and Gabriel flying the ball out, allowing the French champions to retain the European crown.
The defeat marked another painful Champions League final loss for Arsenal, who were also beaten in the 2006 final by Barcelona. Despite the disappointment, the Gunners earned praise for an impressive European campaign and a strong season under Arteta.
For PSG, the victory confirmed their growing dominance in European football as they secured back-to-back Champions League titles.
