US President Donald Trump was evacuated from the White House Correspondents’ Dinner on Saturday night after gunshot-like sounds sparked panic and prompted an immediate security response.
The incident unfolded at the Washington Hilton hotel, where journalists, politicians and invited guests had gathered for the high-profile annual event. Witnesses reported hearing a series of loud popping noises, initially mistaken for harmless disturbances, before security agents moved swiftly to secure the venue.
Secret Service personnel quickly escorted Trump, alongside First Lady Melania Trump and other senior officials, out of the ballroom. Attendees were briefly thrown into confusion, with some taking cover under tables as officers assessed the situation.
Authorities later confirmed that a suspect had opened fire near a security screening area outside the main event space. A Secret Service agent was struck during the incident but was protected by a bulletproof vest and did not sustain life-threatening injuries.
