Transport and business activities were brought to a standstill in parts of Vihiga County after protests by boda boda operators turned chaotic following a police crackdown on motorbikes which allegedly led to the death of one person.
The unrest began on Sunday evening after law enforcement officers launched an operation targeting motorcycles, prompting anger among riders who accused authorities of acting unfairly and without prior engagement. The operators, many of whom depend on the sector for their livelihoods, took to the streets in protest.
Demonstrations intensified along the busy Kisumu–Busia highway, where protesters barricaded roads using stones and burning debris. The disruption led to a major traffic snarl-up, with vehicles stranded for hours as motorists struggled to find alternative routes.
Police were deployed to restore order, leading to confrontations with the demonstrators. Officers used tear gas to disperse crowds, while some protesters reportedly threw stones, escalating tensions. Witnesses said the standoff created panic among residents and road users.
In towns such as Luanda, businesses closed early amid fears of looting and insecurity, as the unrest spread across key trading centres.
