DCI officers exhume wrongly buried body in Vihiga after mortuary mix-up

Detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) have exhumed the body of a man in Vihiga County following a burial mix-up that saw a family inter the wrong body.

The officers, who traveled from Nairobi, conducted the exhumation exercise at a homestead in Chotero village, Mbihi sub-location, after obtaining a court order to proceed with the process.

The body exhumed was identified as that of Polycarp Omari Ondieki, who had been mistakenly buried on March 23. Reports indicate that the family had unknowingly collected the wrong body from a mortuary in Nairobi, leading to the mix-up.

The error is said to have involved two families, one from Vihiga and another from Kisii County, raising concerns over identification procedures at the mortuary.

Following the exhumation, the affected family is now preparing to bury the remains of their actual kin, Collins Onzore, whose body was transported overnight from Nairobi.

The incident has highlighted gaps in body identification and handling processes, with authorities expected to continue investigations into how the mix-up occurred.

Officials indicated that the exercise was conducted in compliance with legal and public health requirements after approval from the court. Further updates are expected as investigations progress.
