President William Ruto has pledged KSh100 million to kick-start the construction of a proposed university in Likuyani, Kakamega County, following a donation of 50 acres of land by the family of the late Wafula Wabuge.
Ruto made the announcement on Sunday, October 11, 2026, during a church service at St. Mark’s Catholic Church in Matunda, where he said the government would increase funding to initiate the project.
The President also announced that Education Principal Secretary Beatrice Inyang’ala would visit the area the following week to follow up on the plans. The proposed institution is expected to expand access to higher education for residents of Likuyani and neighboring areas.
In a related announcement, Ruto pledged KSh10 million towards the construction of Matunda Day School, which reportedly has approximately 1,500 students.
The President further announced plans to gazette Kakamega Referral Hospital as a Level Six facility in November 2026, paving the way for increased national government support for its operations.
He said KSh1 billion had been secured to complete the hospital’s construction, which had stalled. He added that he had reached an agreement with the Kakamega governor on upgrading the facility from Level Five to Level Six.
Under the proposed arrangement, the national government would take responsibility for funding the hospital’s operations, allowing the county government to redirect resources to other development projects.
The announcements place education and healthcare infrastructure at the center of the president’s latest development pledges in Kakamega County.
Further details on the proposed university’s status, academic programs, and construction timeline are yet to be confirmed.
