Former teacher dies while seeking KSh 6 million for live-saving liver transplant

Kate Nabutola, whose courageous fight against a severe liver condition touched many across the country, has died after a long battle with illness. She passed away on July 7 at Kenyatta National Hospital while undergoing treatment.

In a desperate effort to save her life, Kate travelled to India in the hope of undergoing a liver transplant. Doctors identified a compatible donor, but the procedure could not proceed because she was unable to raise the KSh 6 million required for treatment. Without the necessary funds, she returned to Kenya without receiving the life-saving transplant.

Despite numerous fundraising campaigns, donations, and heartfelt appeals from family, friends, and well-wishers, the financial target remained out of reach. As her condition deteriorated, she continued receiving treatment at Kenyatta National Hospital until her death.

Kate was formerly a teacher at Kolanya Girls High School before leaving the teaching profession in 2014 to serve as a protocol officer in the Bungoma County Government.

She leaves behind a grieving family and five children, for whom she fought tirelessly to live. Her passing is a painful reminder of the challenges many patients face in accessing costly specialized medical treatment and the devastating consequences that can arise when financial barriers stand in the way of life-saving care.

Her death has also sparked reflection among many who followed her journey on social media. Some have questioned why stronger support did not come when she urgently needed help, noting the contrast between the tributes being shared after her passing and the limited assistance she received during her struggle for survival.
