Lugari Member of Parliament Nabii Nabwera yesterday hosted more than 500 Junior Secondary School (JSS) teachers at his home in Mbagara Sub-Location, Mautuma Ward, in what is widely seen as an early push for grassroots support ahead of the 2027 General Election.
The gathering, which drew teachers from across Lugari and neighboring Matete, featured a bull fiesta and get-together party. Nabwera framed it as an occasion to build unity and celebrate teachers’ achievements.
The event, however, is seen as part of an early mobilization strategy. Teachers are influential opinion leaders in rural communities, and courting them before the official campaign season allows an incumbent to consolidate support and close possible political gaps.
Addressing the teachers, Nabwera thanked them for their dedication and reaffirmed his commitment to supporting them, urging them to relax and refresh their minds.
The event also took on a wider political tone with the presence of Kakamega County Woman Representative Elsie Muhanda, who used the platform to attack Governor Fernandes Barasa. She accused him of failing to deliver tangible development despite the county receiving about KSh18 billion from the National Treasury.
Muhanda went further, declaring that she is ready to face Barasa in the 2027 General Election, a statement that signals early jockeying for the county’s top seat.
The remarks suggest that, with the next election still months away, political battle lines in Kakamega are already being drawn, with teachers emerging as a coveted constituency.
