The Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) is investigating a case in which a suspect was found dead inside a police cell at Mudete in Vihiga County.
Police said they found the body of Sosness Indimuli, the suspect, lying lifeless in the cell on the evening of July 24, 2023.
Indimuli was earlier attacked by the mob at Gavundia Sub-location on accusations of defiling a female juvenile aged 15 years.
Police said they rescued him and took him to the Vihiga County Referral Hospital, where he was treated and discharged in fair condition before he was locked up in police custody.
He would be discovered dead in the cells hours later by officers who were taking over the report office and the cell sentry duties.
IPOA officers believe the suspect was not taken to the hospital as claimed.
The body was later moved to the mortuary pending an autopsy.
