A group of people rallying behind Lugari MP Nabii Nabwera has earned itself a rather intriguing moniker: the “praise and worship team.”
Comprising predominantly young people, this digital battalion has gained notoriety for its swift response to any dissenting voices within social media circles and its readiness to pounce on anyone of contrary opinion about the leader.
Coiners of the phrase claim the team is determined to bring down anyone who, in any way, points out the weaknesses and failures of the leader and, in the long run, sabotage the very course they claim to support.
“The ‘praise and worship team’ paints Nabwera as a leader incapable of wrongdoing, which is dangerous. You post something that seems to criticize the MP, and you’ll have tens of youths countering you with harsh words almost immediately,” claims a critic who wouldn’t wish to be mentioned.
Word has it that the team is made up of a group of less educated and unemployed youths who lurk in social media corners, especially on WhatsApp and Facebook, their primary battlegrounds.
Some suggest that they thrive on handouts, viewing their role as a means of survival.
“To them, shutting down any form of criticism is a source of living, and massaging the MP’s ego seemingly secures them a place at the proverbial dinner table,” argues the critic.
He believes the MP enjoys some admiration because he seems oblivious to the somehow fake flattery.
“I am convinced that the praise and worship team’s loyalty would wane if they were not receiving favors or expecting something in return. Many of them are motivated by the prospect of gaining employment, favors, or financial assistance from the MP,” adds the critic.
Nabwera’s support base has experienced significant growth since his victory in the 2022 election, a stark contrast to the widespread disdain he once faced. Ironically, some of his most ardent supporters today were among his harshest critics in the past
