A family in Sharumba Village in Ikolomani Constituency, Kakamega County, is crying for justice after their son died after he was beaten by Nyumba Kumi officials as a punishment.
Moses Masero, a father of three, received news that his 15-year-old son, whom he had sent to buy supper, had been caught in a female classmate’s compound. When he went to check, he found the Nyumba Kumi official holding a stick in his hand and gripping the young boy by the throat.
“While watching the news, I received a call from an unknown number. The caller, claiming to be the chairman of the neighbourhood watch in the Musingu area, said he had my child, who had committed an offence. I asked where and if I could come. He said we’re in Musingu, and upon arrival, this so-called chairman had a stick in hand and was gripping my child by the throat,” Masero narrated in tears.
The boy was rushed into the house after the incident and left with his uncle and grandmother. He was rushed to a local hospital and the Kakamega County Referral Hospital after his condition worsened at night.
The following morning, he could not speak or open his eyes, and he succumbed to the injuries.
“I later received a call and was told, ‘Baba Uti, Uti has passed away.’ My child had never been sick, not even with malaria,” Masero said as tears rolled down his cheeks.
