Enraged Kenyans have taken to social media to lament the high food prices being experienced across the country.
Kenyans are crying to the government to take necessary steps to lower food prices, in a move dubbed #lowerfoodprices.
The prices of common foodstuffs have gone up recently to unbearable heights. In January 2022 alone, the Kenya National Bureau of Statistics (KNBS) reported a 9% increase in basic commodities.
The increase is detrimental as it has affected the basic food commodities such as maize flour, bread, cooking oil and sugar.
As a result, millions of Kenyans are struggling to put food on the table, and only a few can manage three meals a day.
Currently, a kilo of sugar retails between Ksh 130 to Ksh 150, up from Ksh 80. The price of cooking oil has doubled, with a litre going for Ksh 300, up from Ksh 160. The prices of wheat flour and maize flour have steadily risen from Ksh 90 to Ksh 150 and Ksh 90 to sh120 respectively.
This has caused great anger among Kenyans, in a period where all eyes are aimed at the August general election.
Some of the views of Kenyans in the online outrage are as below:
“We can’t be buying 1kg of cooking fat at ksh290 & Raila is Telling us he wants to continue with Uhuru’s Legacy!!!”

“Schools are closing soon and kids are coming home for almost 7 weeks. It’s quite a challenge providing for the family with these overrated food prices”
– Petah Mokeira(@PetrahMokeira)20 February 2022.
“The time is now, A hungry man is an angry man. I’m bitter our children won’t learn on empty stomachs” – G (GatwaElijah) 20 February 2022
Most Kenyans are wondering where is the government which they elected while the cost of living is getting tougher by each day.
