Paul Gicheru, a lawyer who had been charged at the International Court of Justice (ICC) for bribing witnesses in a case facing President William Ruto and journalist Joshua Sang, was found dead on Monday night at his home in Karen, Nairobi.
The family confirmed his shocking demise, with police saying the cause is not known yet, but circumstances pointing to his death suggest that he could have been poisoned.
“He had late lunch and felt unwell and went to bed but he did not wake up,” police said, adding that he was found unresponsive at 7 pm.
His son too collapsed at was rushed to the Karen hospital where he was examined and his condition is stable, police further said.
Gicheru was accused of offenses against the administration of justice by allegedly bribing witnesses to either recant their testimonies or refuse to testify against the crime against humanity cases that were facing President William Ruto and journalist Joshua Sang.
The charges against Ruto and Sang were officially dropped in 2016 after they were found with know cases to answer.
In Gicheru’s pre-trial, he pleaded not guilty to all charges.
The ICC is expected to pronounce its judgment on the case within a reasonable time.
