3 arrested for stealing 26 gas cylinders in Lugari

Two of the five suspects are at large.

Three men from Munge CBD in Mautuma Ward, Lugari Sub-county of Kakamega County, have been arrested for stealing 26 gas cylinders from a local shop at the market center.

The three suspects, Sailas Lumbasi , 24, Nathan Sirenge, 34, and Bonface Mwanzia, 21, are said to be relatives and, together with two others who have not been arrested, are accused of breaking into the shop of Peter Simiyu on Monday night and making away with 26 gas cylinders.

Confirming the incident, Panpaper Police Station Inspector Frederick Okweri told the Western Kenya Times that his team was notified by the shop owner and immediately deployed a reinforcement to seize the suspects.

The three were bundled into a police van and taken to the police station/Tom Lutali, WKT

“We have arrested three people whom we believe were among the five suspects who carried out the robbery. We’re still investigating the incident,” he said.

The inspector said that 20 out of the 26 gas cylinders have been recovered, among them 11 filled and nine empty.

Peter Masinde, the owner of the stolen property, expressed disbelief and urged the youths of Mautuma Ward not to allow selfishness to overpower them.

“It’s true, we have three suspects. One of them apologized, but the law must take its cause,” he said, adding that this is the third time that his shop has been robbed.

Mr. Okweri, on his side, has urged youths to use their time to earn an honest living.

The three suspects are currently under police custody awaiting arraignment in court.
