Residents of Kakamega will benefit from the plan by the ICT Authority of Kenya, through the Ministry of ICT, E-government, and Communication, in collaboration with the county government, to offer free Wi-Fi services in designated areas.
Some 100 sites have been identified for installing the project meant to enhance service delivery and access to information about government, according to Ms. Rachel Atamba, the CECM in charge of the initiative.
The project was launched during the performance management and staff appraisal meeting on Tuesday, and an inspection was done at the Muliro Gardens Recreational Park, meant to be the first site, on Monday by the Chief Officer for ICT, Phanuel Musasia, and his E-government and Communication counterpart, Joseph Lutilo.
Installation works have commenced in the park, with the Wi-Fi signal expected to cover a radius of 100 meters.
Other sites that already have internet running are Mwiyala and Musoli primary schools in Lurambi sub-county and Ikolomani sub-county, respectively, with the two awaiting commissioning.
The County Government offices situated at Bukhungu Stadium will also benefit from Last Mile internet connectivity, a pipeline project by the ICT Authority.
