Mourners at a funeral in Musutsu village in Lumakanda Ward, Lugari Sub-County, were left in utter disbelief after police halted a burial ceremony midway and carried the body of the deceased back to the mortuary.
The police officers from Turbo and Lumakanda police stations, who were armed to the tooth, served the burial organizers a court order barring the process.
West FM reported that some family members threatened to defy the order and go ahead with the burial, but police stood firm and warned them of the consequences.
Police had received instructions to stop the burial after the family of one Shihachi filed a case in court claiming ownership of the piece of land that Alfred Kehodo, the husband of the deceased, Diana Afandi, wanted to bury his beloved wife.
“The order is stopping the burial from taking place on this piece of land; we cannot allow it to go on until the case is heard and concluded,” said an officer on condition of anonymity, as reported by West FM.
The body was taken to the Webuye mortuary in Bungoma County pending the court ruling.
