Police in Vihiga County have destroyed illicit drugs and substances worth Sh1.4 million.
The drugs and substances include 450 brooms, 4 kilograms of powder, 10 kilograms of seeds, 110 rolls of bhang, 2,000 liters of chang’aa, and five cartons of contraband cigarettes allegedly smuggled from Uganda through the Busia border.
The drugs were impounded by police during a raid, but suspects managed to escape.
Speaking to the press while leading the operation at Luanda Market on Thursday, Vihiga County Commissioner Felix Watakila said the action was meant to send a warning to the public against the trade in illicit drugs and substances.
“As a government, we won’t allow criminals to take over our county through the business of selling bhang and illicit brews,” he said, as reported by The Standard.
The commissioner vowed to intensify the crackdown on the illegal business of drugs in the five sub-counties of Vihiga.
“I have directed my chiefs to continue with the operations and ensure that we mop up illicit brews,” he said.
