Vihiga househelp pleads guilty of stealing Sh1 million from her employer

A househelp from Vihiga County has pleaded guilty to stealing Sh1,050,000 from her employer in Nairobi.

Roseline Kahega, the accused, was intercepted by police in Kericho on her way to her rural home after stealing cash belonging to her employer, Libin Abdi Mohamed, at her home in Eastleigh on October 13, 2023.

Ms. Abdi had meant to use the money, which she said she received from relatives and friends abroad, for treatment in India, where she is due to travel for an operation.

Kahenga had been hired part-time to help clean the house but didn’t turn up for work on a specific day and when contacted, her phone was switched off.

On confirming everything in her house, Ms. Mohamed discovered her money was missing and immediately reported the matter to the California Police Department.

Police quickly carried out an investigation and discovered that the suspect had boarded a PSV operating the Nairobi-Vihiga route and was headed to her home in Vihiga.

They notified their colleagues in Kericho after discovering the bus had already left Nairobi.

She was arrested and taken to the Kericho Police Station, where she was searched and found with a silver purse belonging to Ms. Mohamed, Sh. 10,000 and a bus ticket indicating that she was traveling to Mbale.

A bus ticket indicating that she was traveling to Mbale town was also recovered.

The suspect was taken back to Nairobi by DCI after spending time in a police cell and was arraigned in court, where she pleaded guilty to the charges before Senior Principal Magistrate Mary Njagi.
