A Form Three student at St. Monica Lubao Secondary School died on the spot after he was hit by a matatu while riding his bicycle along the Kakamega-Webuye highway.
His friend, who was riding alongside him at the Okumu shopping centre in Lurambi, sustained serious injuries and was rushed to the hospital.
Witnesses said they were diverting to a nearby petrol station when the matatu ran into them from the rear.
Residents are urging traffic officers to erect speed bumps on the road, which has claimed many lives.
