Residents of Lugari Station in Lugari Sub-County, Kakamega County, are calling for swift action against two police officers for brutally assaulting two men, causing them severe bodily harm and leading one of them losing his teeth.
Mr. Rono and Victor Rotich, the two cops attached to the Lugari Franks Police Station, are accused of assaulting 35-year-old Elphas Madanji and his friend Boniface Chaka outside a pub at Lugari Station Market on Sunday night.
The cops allegedly started mercilessly beating Elphas over an undisclosed issue before Boniface intervened to rescue him.
The incident sparked local demonstrations with residents demanding the immediate arrest of the officers and the termination of their employment contracts.
In a show of frustration, the locals even threatened to set the police station on fire if urgent action is not taken.
The victims were rushed to the hospital by market residents following the assault.
“The altercation might have started due to a dispute between the police officers, who were drank, and Marto. The situation escalated outside the pub, leading to a physical confrontation. When his friend tried to intervene, he also suffered minor injuries. Local residents, alarmed by the screams, discovered Marto in a severe state and rushed him to the hospital,” a witness told WKT.
The victim’s wife, Eunice Nasike, told WKT that the issue is being handled carefully and could not provide further details.
Lugari Sub-County OCPD Bernard Ngungu termed the two officers criminals and said they are bad examples to wananchi and a disgrace to the police service.
“Th case has been taken up by the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) and the fate of suspects will be determined by their findings. We always take such matters seriously and if they will be found guilty, they law will take it’s course,” Mr. Ngungu said.
