The Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) is gearing up to establish a game reserve in Lugari Sub-County within Kakamega County, with plans set for early next year.
Karen Ndiema, a senior warden overseeing the Kakamega Forest, said KWS has granted approval for the creation of a reserve spanning 60 acres of land located at Upper Kware in Mautuma Ward.
Named the Lugari Wildlife Green Sanctuary, the reserve aims to showcase a diverse array of wildlife, featuring antelopes, giraffes, and zebras among others.
Ms. Ndiema emphasised that the sanctuary will not include the Big 5 due to the proximity of the community to its anticipated location.
Stressing the seriousness of wildlife protection, the ranger cautioned residents against poaching once the reserve becomes operational, noting that offenders could face severe penalties including life imprisonment or a fine of Sh20 million.
Pamela Kulali, the local chief, urged residents to support the initiative, highlighting its significant economic potential.
