Residents of Lugari Sub-county in Kakamega County have castigated the ongoing work on the Kiwanja Ndege footbridge in Lugari Sub-county, Kakamega County, terming it shoddy.
Reacting to pictures of the progress of the Sh10 million project shared on social media, the residents expressed consternation at how fragile the metals meant to support the bridge looked.
The long overdue project is meant to help residents of Chekalini and Lugari wards swiftly and safely cross to either side of the wide Kipkaren River.
While some praised the work, many thought the footbridge is too narrow and delicate and not worth the quoted Sh10 million.
“Sii hapa watoto wetu wataisha yawa very narrow,” one Ben Alingo said.
“10 million really you people joke too much,” Zack K Huddy commented.
Others questioned the accountability of the funds put into the project, which should have been completed by December 12, 2021.
“Why not build a bridge than this thing which gonna kill many residents….10m really?” Ikoyoyi Odili wrote.
“EACC please come and defend the people of Lugari…” George Lihumi said.
The project resumed two weeks ago after it was stopped due to the metal breaking during mounting on pillars, injuring three workers. As a result, two more pillars are being added to support its weight.
The project management committee chairman, Dickson Wasilwa, told the Western Kenya Times earlier that the project would be completed by the end of this month.
