A section of Kakamega residents took to the streets earlier today to protest the move by the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) to call off elections in Kakamega and Mombasa counties.
Yesterday, the commission’s chairman, Wafula Chebukati, announced that the polls were pushed to a later date due to the harassment and intimidation of IEBC officials.
The town residents, armed with placards, said that the chairman has ill motives.
“We want to know our governor as soon as this… We are afraid that Mr. Chebukati has ill motives for postponing this election. We want to know his interests because we don’t have any problem that has led to the pushing forward of the polls,” Ali Adam Watako, a youth leader in Mumias.
The protesters rubbished claims that there are insecurities in the country that led to the calling off of the polls.
Residents of Mombasa County also held protests in support of their counterparts in Kakamega County.
