Kenyans have elicited mixed reactions on social media following a request by Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua that people in counties with surplus food share with those struggling with hunger in areas facing acute drought.
Gachagua’s sentiments came hours after the government through the Kenya Defense Forces announced delivering a plane hold of emergency relief food to Somalia after Mogadishu was bombed, leaving 125 people dead and more than 300 injured.
DP Gachagua yesterday called upon Kenyans in counties with more than enough food to offer some to citizens in drought-stricken areas, and that did not seemingly sit well with citizens.
“We appeal to Kenyans to give food so that they can be given to those in need. Many Kenyans are suffering, and we are making this appeal to help them. No Kenyan should die from hunger when other Kenyans have surplus food,” he said.
Kenyans have questioned the reasoning behind of DP’s statement, some saying he is the one to give solutions and not Kenyans.
“Imagine feeding others and asking for help from us who are also starving, it’s mind boggling,” one Ursula Otieno commented on Twitter.
Another Kenyan on Twitter, Francis Gatumbi, blamed the DP for lacking means to tackle the food crisis even after his government removed subsidies.
“As a DP, we expected you have solutions to food security. You scrapped subsidy. Now we have to pay more to eat. Now you want us to dig deeper and help while we need help first. Siuache kazi,” he said.
