President William Ruto, on Friday, January 27, issued a directive to the Cabinet Secretary for ICT, Eliud Owalo, to bring the stalled Huduma Namba project to fruition within the next year.
The project, which was launched by Ruto’s predecessor, Uhuru Kenyatta, aims to streamline processes and cut costs related to population registration.
In a speech given at the Data Protection Conference in Nairobi, Ruto expressed disappointment in the previous administration’s failure to complete the project and emphasized its importance in identifying citizens.
Ruto directed Owalo to put systems and structures in place to ensure the project’s success.
The Huduma Namba project, which began with the consolidation of data from primary population registration agencies to national data management departments, was established through Executive Order No. 1 (2018) by former President Uhuru Kenyatta with the goal of managing Kenyans’ identification information.
The National Integrated Identity Management System (NIIMS) program was created as a result of this order.
