Consecration of Pastor Barajah/BBC
A pastor in Mozambique has died while trying to fast for 40 days like Jesus Christ is said to have done in the Bible.
The pastor, known as Fransisco Barajah, founder of the Santa Trindade Evangelical Church, died at a hospital in Beira after relatives and some of his followers insisted.
The man of God lost weight until he could not stand up after 25 days without food or water.
He was diagnosed with acute anemia and failure of his digestive organs, was rehydrated with serums, and an attempt was made to introduce liquid foods, but it was too late and he died on Wednesday, the BBC reported.
Members of his church said fasting was a routine for the pastor, but it never took so long.
“The truth is that my brother suffered from low blood pressure,” his brother Marques Manuel Barajah said.
This is not the first time someone has attempted what Jesus Christ is said to have done in the Bible. In 2015, a Zimbabwean man died after 30 days. In 2006, a British coroner found that a woman had died after attempting such.
