The family of the late Dr. Gideon Simiyu Wamasebu has confirmed his death after he disappeared in Kenya.
Dr. Wamasebu, a Ugandan medical doctor, was found dead in Kakamega County after leaving his home in Mbale town on February 6, 2023. A day after he went missing, his family started receiving distressing messages from his phone, indicating that he had been kidnapped and was being held in Kenya. The kidnappers demanded a hefty ransom of Sh4 million.
“The messages were also seeking a ransom for him to be set free,” the family said in a statement.
The family alerted the Ugandan police, who contacted their Kenyan counterparts, leading to the arrest of several suspects, including a pastor who was known to the deceased. After his arrest, the suspect, identified as Pastor Kelvin, confessed to killing Dr. Wamasebu and led the Kenyan police to the grave where he was buried.
The remains of the deceased have been returned to Uganda, and his family announced that his funeral will take place on February 25 in Namabasa village, near Mbale City, after a requiem mass at St. Austin Church on February 23 at 10 a.m. An overnight vigil will be held at his home.
Dr. Wamasebu retired two years ago from public service and was a private practitioner who offered consulting services and taught at Uganda Martyrs’ University.
“We have lost a loving father, husband, brother, uncle, and friend. Gideon was a kind-hearted and jovial person who loved people and dedicated his life to serving his community. We are shattered by his untimely and senseless death,” the family said.
While the circumstances of Dr. Wamasebu’s death remain unclear, the tragedy has sent shockwaves through the medical community and beyond. His death serves as a reminder of the dangers faced by medical professionals who are often targeted by criminals seeking to exploit their skills and knowledge for personal gain.
