Lugari MP Nabii Nabwera paid a visit to Kivaywa Boys High School on Sunday evening following an incident in which one of the dormitories, Kilimo Dormitory, was burnt to ashes.
The incident was reported at around 9:00 p.m. and is suspected to have been started by a group of rogue students.
Reports on social media earlier indicated that two dormitories were on fire at the extra-county school in Malava Sub-County, Kakamega County, and that a similar incident had occurred at St. Peter’s Mumias Boys.
In a message seen by the Western Kenya Times, the first-time, who is an alumnus of the school, expressed dismay over the incident and the lack of discipline by students.
“Colleagues, I have had a tough evening. The best school in my constituency, Kivaywa High School, with 1400 students, has had one of its dormitories burned by students,” the lawmaker said in a message he shared on WhatsApp.
Mr. Nabwera, who is also a member of the Parliamentary Committee on Education, engaged the school administration, teachers, and students over the matter.
“Leaving the school now. But with assistance of the local community, we have apprehended five students who are crucial suspects. One has accepted. Discipline in schools is such a big challenge,” he wrote.
The cost of property lost in the inferno is yet to be estimated.
