On Friday, Member of the County Assembly (MCA) for Lugari Ward in Kakamega County, Grey Moi, paid a visit to the site of the Marakusi Dispensary building that has been stalled for five years.
The MCA, who was accompanied by the dispensary chairman, Ken Bulimu, and the area community ward administrator, Moses Marachi, charted the way forward towards completion of the structure that has been lying lifeless since 2018 during the tenure of his predecessor, Musa Wangila Makhapila.
Through the efforts of Mr. Moi, the County Government of Kakamega assigned the contractor that has been in charge of the project, Stanley Kilwake, the task of finishing the structure in a year’s time in February.
“The contractor was paid Sh2 million as a deposit to complete the project at a cost of Sh9 million by the end of 2023. Until now, there’s been no progress, something that has infuriated the MCA,” said Mr. Otaro, Grey Moi’s personal assistant.
Mr. Otaro said the MCA will be traveling to Kakamega on Monday to follow up on the issue and request the CECM for Roads, Energy, and Public Works to assign the project to a new contractor.
“The MCA is doing everything he can to ensure the project is complete by the end of this year,” he said.
The old building that used to house the dispensary, launched in 2008, was condemned in 2018 by the public health department after it developed cracks on the walls. Drugs were removed, but other property remained.
In 2022, security guards manning the new structure complained of a delay in payment of their salaries by the County Government of Kakamega for almost three and a half years.
