The collapse of a gold mine in Ikolomani in Kakamega County has led to the deaths of two gold miners.
The mine caved in while they were 150 feet under and killed the two men, aged 38 and 39, through suffocation from lack of oxygen.
One of those who have perished is a foreman who entered the mine to inspect the hole’s formation following dewatering and lowering of the water table, according to Evans Museve, a miner.
The second one is an operator who went to check after the foreman failed to return.
The bodies of the deceased have been retrieved and taken to the Kakamega General Hospital mortuary as family members, miners and residents urge the county government to supply them with better mining equipment.
