St. Augustine’s Mlimani Mixed Day Boarding Secondary School in Mautuma Ward, Lugari Constituency, has grown to be one of the most competitive schools in the region.
In 2022, the school was upgraded to the county level owing to its expanding population and good performance. Now it has a total of 1,012 students, a rapid increase since its inception in 2007, when it had only 250 students.
In the last five years, St. Augustine’s Mlimani has recorded steady improvement both in its min score and university entry grades in the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE).
In the KCSE 2017, the school managed to have seven students with university entry grades and scored a min grade of 3.7 from a total of 132 students.
In KCSE 2018, 11 students scored university entry grades as the school garnered a min grade of 4.4 out of a total of 125 students, a significant improvement from the previous year.
The year 2019 saw the school improve further, recording a min score of 4.7 as 13 out of 143 students managed university entry grades.
In KCSE 2020, the school’s graph rose even higher when it recorded a positive deviation on the min score and university entry grades, this time around managing a 4.9 and taking 33 out of 158 students to the university despite the effects of COVID-19, and that would rise even higher in 2021.
The school recorded a mini score of 5.3 in KCSE 2021 and managed to send 35 out of 141 students to the university.
Mr. Moses Mtoro, the school’s acting deputy principal, said the five-year results is evidence that the school is soaring to greatness.
He said this year the 253 candidates are well prepared to ensure the graph rises even higher and the school claims top positions in the constituency.
He anticipates a minimum of 5.5 and an increase in university entrance grades.
“We are sure that we will produce the best candidates in Lugari Constituency for both the male and female students,” he said.
The acting deputy principal called upon the area MP to fulfill his promise of buying the school a bus and asked him to construct a decent hall for holding school meetings and functions.

In this feature about six schools preparing for the coming Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE), we will be looking back five years to assess the schools’ performance. We also asked school heads about their projections for the coming KCSE 2022 exams.
The schools we selected are Bishop Sulumeti Girls in Lumakanda Ward, St. Paul’s Lugari Boys and Mufutu Secondary School in Lugari Ward, St. Cecelia Girls and St. Augustine’s Mlimani in Mautuma Ward, and Lukhokho Secondary School in Lwandeti Ward.
The schools were selected based on criteria of ranking as well as notable factors such as regional balance and unique educational aspects.
