Bungoma voters go to the poll to elect their senator — what you need to know

The senatorial race is attracting 11 candidates.

Polls have been opened this morning for the Bungoma County senatorial seat that was left vacant after Moses Wetang’ula resigned for the National Assembly Speaker post.

The election invites 646,598 registered voters and 11 candidates, although the race has been narrowed down to a three-horse race featuring Moses Mwambu Mabonga of the United Democratic Party (UDA), David Wafula Wakoli of Ford-Kenya and Atanas Wafula Wamunyinyi of the Democratic Action Party of Kenya (DAP-K).

Others are Robert Sifuna of the Roots Party, Aaron Wafula of the Republican Liberty Party, Fredrick Busolo of the Vibrant Democratic Party, Elias Sikulu of the People’s Empowerment Party, Geoffrey Wanyonyi of NOPEU-P and independent candidates Raidon Munoko, Julius Masinde and Enock Makokha.

The by-election is happening in 806 polling stations in 9 constituencies from 6 AM to 5 PM today.

Other areas where leaders resigned to take up new positions in the cabinet and government are Mumias North in Kakamega County, Utawala Ward in Nairobi County, South Gem Ward in Siaya County, Ololmasani Ward in Narok County and Kyome/Thaana Ward in Kitui County.

Voters in the regions are also electing their leaders today.
