Moses Wetang’ula led Ford Kenya’s candidate, Wafula Wakoli, is nearing victory according to preliminary results from the nine wards in the Bungoma County Senatorial by-election conducted yesterday by the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC).
So far, Wafula Wakoli is leading with 64,591 votes, followed by Mwambu Mabonga of the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) who has 37,349 votes and Wafula Wamunyinyi of DAP-K who has 17,165 votes, according to a reliable source.
The provisional results show Wakoli leading in 8 of the 9 electoral wards: Kanduyi, Sirisia, Kabuchai, Kimilili, Mt. Elgon, Webuye West, Webuye East and Tongaren.
Former Bumula MP Mwambu Mabonga is leading in Bumula Ward with 9,581 votes followed by Wakoli’s 4,011 votes and Wamunyinyi’s 2,108 votes.
The election was announced by the IEBC after the seat fell vacant following the resignation of Moses Wetang’ula for the Speaker of the National Assembly seat.
The race attracted 11 candidates but Wakoli, Mabonga and Wamunyinyi were regarded as the horses in the race.
The IEBC is expected to announce the winner today.
