Former Moses Wetang’ula’s aide, Wafula Wakoli, has won the Bungoma senatorial by-election.
Mr. Wakoli, who vied on the DAP-K ticket, has been declared winner by the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) after defeating his two closest opponents, Mwambu Mabonga of the United Democratic Party (UDA) and Wafula Wamunyinyi of the Democratic Action Party (DAP-K).
Wakoli garnered 64,009 votes, coming ahead of Mabonga who got 45,682 and Wamunyinyi who received 22,296 votes from all the nine constituencies.
The seat was left vacant on September 7 after the then Senator-elect Moses Wetang’ula resigned to pursue the National Assembly Speaker seat.
Wetangula of Ford-Kenya had won the Bungoma senatorial seat for the third consecutive term after getting 286,143 votes ahead of his closest opponent, Machacha Machembe who received around 21,000 votes.
