Lugari Ward’s all time football heroes, Greenland FC, are the new champions of the Lugari NG-CDF Football Tournament after defeating Maturu Taifa Stars from Lwandeti Ward in a thrilling final played this evening at the Matete Sports Ground in Chevaywa Ward.
The match went to the break with Greenland leading through a goal netted by Bob Centric. A determined Maturu Taifa Stars equalized in the second-half through Harrison Luvonga, forcing a draw.
The match would then be decided through penalty shootouts, in which Greenland FC thrashed Maturu 2-0.
Greenland will now walk away with the trophy, money worth Sh100,000 or more and other prices.
Maturu Taifa Stars, Mlimani FC from Chekalini Ward, and Ajax from Lumakanda Ward will also get cash prizes, trophies, and other items for emerging among the best four teams.
The hallmark event organized by Lugari MP Nabii Nabwera was graced by leaders from Western Kenya, including Kibra MP Peter Orero, who was the chief guest, Kiminini MP Maurice Kakai Bisau, Likuyani MP Innocent Mugabe, and Bumula MP Wamboka Wanami.
The event was also flunked by Kakamega County Women Representative Elsie Muhanda, Kakamega CEC for Sports Mofat Mandela and chairman for Dimba Patriots FC Dick Anido.
The tournament kicked off on December 26, 2022, inviting eight teams from all the six wards of Lugari Constituency competing in knock-out play system.
