Arsenal exited the UEFA Europa League at the last 16 stage last night after a miserable penalty shootout against Sporting CP of Portugal at the Emirates Stadium.
The Premier League leaders looked contended after Granit Xhaka gave them a first-half lead and put them at an advantage of 3-2 following a 2-2 aggregate in the first leg at Lisbon last week.
The visitors were determined for the victory when Pedro Goncalves equalized in the second half.
Mirkel Arteta’s men dominated the extra 30 minutes but without success, as the Sporting keeper Antonio Adan denied them three attempts.
Adan emerged the hero of the shootout, saving Gabriel Martinelli’s penalty as Lisbon won 5-4 to storm into the quarterfinals.
Manchester United, on the other hand, became the only English team that has qualified for the quarterfinals after holding their hosts, Real Betis from Spain, to an aggregate of 5-1 following a 4-1 aggregate in the first leg at Old Trafford.
Marcus Rashford scored for the Red Devils in the 55th minute at home of Betis, handing United a 1-0 victory.
