Pamela Kulali, the chief of Mautuma Location in Mautuma Ward, Lugari Sub-County, on Thursday led the initiative to plant 1,100 trees in four schools in her area.
Ms. Kulali mobilized learners and teachers at AIC Sipande Primary School, AIC Sipande Secondary School, Mukuyu Primary School, and Macho Muslim Primary School to plant bluegam, cypress, pine, indigenous trees, and fruit trees.
The administrator said the initiative is in accordance with the national goal of achieving 10 percent forest cover and to support the government’s target of planting 15 billion trees by 2032.
“The government has been keen on making sure that the environment is conserved in a move to combat the effects of climate change and sustain agriculture,” Ms. Kulali said.
The exercise seeks to make use of the long rain season in which trees have the highest chance of surviving.
“I source the trees, then connect with schools within my area, and then we arrange dates for the planting.”
She said the exercise will be repeated annually.
