In a shocking turn of events, Kenya Premier League heavyweights AFC Leopards have been slapped with a Sh500,000 fine after their recent clash with home rivals Kakamega Homeboyz.
The Football Kenya Federation and Competition Committee ruled in favor of Kakamega Homeboyz following last Sunday’s clashes at Bukhungu Stadium which led to the suspension of the match, leaving the Leopards reeling from the repercussions of their fans’ reckless behavior.
FKF CEO Barry Otieno ruled that Ingwe have been snatched three points from their already accumulated points as their rivals were awarded three points and two goals, leaving them in precarious position as they struggle to keep their league hopes alive.
“The FKF-PL Round 25 match no. 222 has been awarded to Kakamega Homeboyz on a three (3) points-two (2) goals basis. However, AFC Leopards SC has been docked a further three (3) points from the already accumulated points,” read the letter released on Wednesday.
The Leopards have also been ordered to cater for or refund incurred medical expenses by center referee Michael Obuya, who was assaulted by a section of Ingwe’s fans turned goons.
The team will also play its next four games without their fans.
“Leopards shall play their next four (4) home FKF-PL matches behind closed doors. The club shall ensure this is adhered to. They will also pay a fine of Sh500,000,” read the letter signed by Otieno.
The fans invaded the pitch and forced the game to stop at the 34th minute, protesting the referee’s decision not to red-card Homeboyz goalkeeper Farouk Shikalo for allegedly handling the ball outside the box when Homeboyz were leading 1-0.
Police officers stepped up and lobbed tear gas to disperse the crowd.
The committee said that they are investigating the Leopards’ coach, Patrick Aussems, and goalkeeper trainer, Lawrence Webo, for their conduct in the troubled match.
