The price of dried maize has suddenly dropped from Sh200 to Sh80 per gorogoro (2 kilograms) in Western Kenya.
This is after farmers in the region experienced a bumper harvest as the harvesting season for maize and beans in the region begins.
A cross-check by WKT in Bungoma, Buisa and Kakamega counties reveals that farmers are now selling the produce, which was recently a rare commodity, for not more than Sh100 for every two kilograms.
In Bungoma town, vendors can be seen carrying the produce on bicycles searching for a quick market. The same case is being experienced in the village such as Mayanja in Kimaeti where residents are selling the produce as soon as it dries.
In Busia, the produce is going for even as low as Sh70 in the five markets visited: Buyofu, Butula, Lukolis, Malaba Town, and Miyanga.
Farmers are giving the produce away at a throw away price to cater for other expenses such as school fees.
The price of beans ranges from Sh200 to Sh400 per gorogoro, depending on the variety.
